Posted by Theophilus John 16:7-8 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” The sending forth of the Holy Spirit was somehow connected to Jesus finishing His ministry on earth, ascending to heaven and being glorified. The Holy Spirit was not given to the saints before Christ’s ascension because they had not been redeemed until after the Cross. Once Christ finished the work of salvation, all men can be filled with the Spirit through faith in Christ... because the work of grace through faith in Christ cleanses the heart and perfects the spirit. Matt 3:11-12 “I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." When Jesus ascended to God He received the power to send forth the Holy Spirit into the world and pour out the Spirit upon all flesh.
