I can see how I might have gotten off track . . . I guess what I mean is that I think way too much importance is placed on the original sign of initial baptism and not enough emphasis on what it really means to continue on being spirit filled. Tongues is really just meaningless to me if I'm not spirit filled. You might even say it is similar to what Paul said in 1 Cor 13: You speak in tongues? So what? Are you spirit filled? Do you have love (first), but. . . There is more to ignore (after being BHS with tongues) than just love. Though Paul did say love was the greatest. But much of the church has forgotten even more than that. If I have tongues, but I have not power, it means nothing. . . If I have tongues and I am not a witness to the world, I have nothing. . . If I have tongues and no one ever gets healed when I pray for them, this should bother me. . . If I have tongues and nothing "spiritual" is happening in my life, that is a problem . . . I'm not saying, "Don't seek tongues" - we are supposed to seek "spirituals", we are supposed to pray in the spirit. But, what about the more weighty evidences of the spirit? What about fulfilling what it really means to be spirit filled. I'll tell you this: If I had been taught that tongues was wrong or had never learned about it, but, I had desperately sought after God and he met me, gave me dreams, visions or endued me with power (Joan of Arc, maybe?), it just wouldn't really matter would it? When I pray for people anymore, I don't look for tongues. I recommend that they seek it. And I also speak to them about the kingdom of God and its power . . . to heal, to overcome, and to help them become like Christ. I speak to them about their authority to overcome principalities and I show them how to fight, to rebuke, to put on a garment of praise, and to be humble. Tongues is part of the package, but it is no longer a big focus. What I want to see is people continuing on in being filled with the spirit. So, is tongues the sign? It is the sign of the initial Baptism mentioned at the outpouring in the NT. But what is the sign (signs) of continually being filled? That is more important. Trace
