Some years ago, I watched an episode (if that's the correct word) of Tony Brown's Journal on PBS. His guest was a black woman who suggested that it is "racist" to oppose affirmative action. When Brown (no fan of AA) pointed out that people can oppose it for reasons other than racism, she didn't have anything to say, possibly out of respect for the fact that she was on his show. She also cited English-only advocacy as evidence of "racism" and "nativism." Imagine that - wanting people to speak the language. The nerve! Such blind contempt for one's own country and its history and traditions is mystifying to me.

I completely agree. The illogic behind this reasoning is not unlike that of (forgive me for saying this yet again) affirmative action and other allied issues, particularly multictuluralism
and "diversity" advocacy.
The fact that speaking English would enhance immigrants' chances of success in the American mainstream went right over her head.
