Posted by MtG In New Mexico, the State Police in our area (Aztec) kept lists of very poor families. When they came across a recent roadkill deer, they would contact the next family on their list and tell them where the deer could be found. My neighbor was able to get a roadkill deer this way. He and his wife invited me over for deer dinner that evening. The deer did not have the customary recent kill care (gutting right away, hanging to cool, waiting for several days, etc.), yet was the very best deer meat I've ever eaten.

Brother from Chapel, living at time in Montana, thought he had made the best deer jerky. Gave Leslie and I a big baggie full of it. Nastiest stuff on earth. We tossed the baggie of meat. He kept offering more every time we visited. We needed to keep finding excuses to not take any home.
