At times, he showed great loyalty and support to David, such as here when he tried to prevent David from sinning by trusting in the flesh. And yet, at other times, he demonstrated treachery, and evidence of having his own agenda, such as when he (and his brother Abishai) slew Abner after David welcomed Abner into the fold from the house of Saul and made him a general. And, of course, his ultimate act of treachery was siding with Adonijah over Solomon, despite Solomon being God's choice as the next king. Ultimately, he got what he deserved when Solomon had him slain, something that David arguably should have done himself.
