I usually only like three or four members of one team or another, but this team is different. I didn’t expect to like Anthem. As soon as I saw him, I saw a Sentry or a Superman character. But he’s not like that. Of course, he’s the team’s Tony Stark -- an actor who is an ex-drunken playboy type -- but he’s still interesting. Supernaut is also very interesting, a paraplegic who needs his big suit of armor in order to walk around. Veda is the team’s “spoiled brat”, the uppity one with the interesting power to create soldiers out of anything around her. Rebecca, the blonde, is the sweetness and light one, while Mulholland (my favorite character so far) is the one with the attitude. Calamity is the one member I don’t much like, and I think one reason is that his costume makes him look almost exactly like Gravity. Not that I dislike Gravity or anything. Plus, we really didn’t get any kind of look-see into his personality, so maybe my opinion on him will change. And then there’s the team’s behind-the-scenes leader, a most pleasant surprise -- Pepper Potts Hogan! I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing Pepper until I saw her here. I think she’s definitely an awesome addition to the title. The dynamics of the team and their “can only be around for a year” thing worked for me. These guys can only have their powers for a year before their bodies start deteriorating, if I read what was inferred correctly. And these people are already trained prior to “becoming a super-hero”, prior to entering the field of battle, something that I think is a serious failing in the AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE book, a series featuring a bunch of young, inexperienced brats with attitudes who get thrown into big battles while still in the middle of being trained. But the clincher to this whole thing was the super-surprise ending, at least for me. I’m not talking about the appearance of what appears to be a new version of the Soviet Super-Soldiers. I sort of expected a splash page of them showing up, considering the cover to the next issue features some of these guys. Oh, no. That wasn’t the surprise that hooked me. And I’m willing to bet most of you reading this can easily guess what I am talking about: The return of IRON MAIDEN!!! Sweet holy crap!!! I’ve been waiting to see Iron Maiden again for so damn long now! She’s a serious assassin wearing an exoskeleton for protection who once took on the Black Widow and stood her ground! Last year, she made a quickie cameo appearance in THUNDERBOLTS, which wasn’t that pleasing, but I have high hopes that Fraction will put her to good use in the next issue. I hope he displays her as the considerable threat I know she can be. Seeing Iron Maiden on the last page cemented this title in my pull list. It’s now in my top four comics reading list, too, right under MS. MARVEL, HEROES FOR HIRE and NOVA.

The unexpected happened after I read this first issue: I discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed a new title I wasn’t expecting to like that much. Everything in this book was fabulous, from the gorgeous artwork and luscious colors to the excellent writing. While I don’t care for Matt Fraction’s work on PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL or on IRON FIST, he hit it out of the ballpark with this one.
