Yah finally got to read the whole thing and have to say I loved it.Story and art-even the covers complement each other perfectly.Begining with a mystery that eventually warps into a cosmic saga set on Earth was a clever wrap-a-round story idea hooked me.Also made me look forward to the new series, butthats a thread for another column.
I felt everyone(deviants included)fit into the story nicely and were complete beings. This is pure Gaimen but also prime Romita nd company.Ikaris was powerful-confused for a while-but powerful.Thena and Sersi had multi-faucted charaters and problems that the split between god and mortal brought out and added depth. The closest thing to a gripe is the return of Zuras,I thought the Eternals were more interesting without him.Druig was sinister and his role reminded me of Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs in that he steals the show in some ways.Made me think he will be a vital charater for the future.Sprite was a great choise for catalyst-remember that Highlander episode Gaimen seems to pay tribute to?Anyway his problem was organic to the storyline though only an Eternal could come up with his solution.Expect Sprite to return sometime soon.Ajax had little to do but thats o.k. since we know more is coming.Markarri was the real center of the story and his connection to the Gleaming Celestral made sense because it certainly wouldnt want Ajax telling the others his plans. The Celestral was well done-his awakening and the conversation with Mark set up questions I look forward to explanations in the future.Romitas art really stood out with the Giants look and feel of terrible danger. In the end many questions answered and many new ones are set up-I couldnt ask for more.Next time my thoughts on the on-going series-have to read #s6&7 first.
