Hamster food

Can someone tell me why my adult (two feet or more) corn snakes when they ate two baby hamsters ( my friend and i breed hamsters to give them a variety of food and just sometimes little snack) they ate them alive? they didn't even try to kill them they just basically chewed them and swallowed them..Does anyone know why they didn't kill them?
