I must have been wired, from drinking to much tea that night.
I think Shatner is a pretty Ok guy, and actor. It's just
that darned Roddenberry, that gets me going. He's like the
Nixon of scifi. Says he's about one thing, does almost the
complete opposite. And fooled all of us for years.
.
But even Nimoy had to admit that a few of Star Trek's (TOS) stories
were an embarrassment. Like the ones with Nazis in them. And the
planet of primatives still fighting the cold war (The Omega Glory).
Seemed like S.T. was justifying 20th century's wars, more often
than it was advocating peace. And later, after the series
has been cancelled, we hear about US soldiers and POWs recalling
Star Trek trivia to cope with the stress. That nice, but
it's still war propaganda however you dress it up.
.
But I quess I'm equally guilty of smuggling anti-war propaganda
into a birthday greeting for William Shatner. Who is probably
trying to remain as neutral as possible about such things, so
he can keep working in that town. To his credit, Shatner
has acted in other roles since S.T. TOS, that were not so
militaristic. And his S.T. movies were more thoughtful than
the series ever was. Even when he was battling Khan. If
he only hadn't done S.T.5 (was there any good reason to inflict
that one on us, except to make money?). Well I guess he's
done with S.T. altogether now (HE'S DONE WITH STAR TREK).
.
Oh yeah, that reminds me. I loved his character in the
"Airplane 2". Basically paroding his Kirk persona, as commander
of the moon. I believe that was his first ever comedy role
in film. And what a great job he did back then.
