As for the British space program, they did the same thing "Doctor Who" and the Andersons did: appeal to the audience. They'd react better to the idea of a British-based astronaut program than merely being bystanders as NASA took command. I don't think I've even seen "It Came From Beyond Space". I'll have to look that one up, Dex. Thanks for the tip. And I agree that "Five Million Years to Earth" (a.k.a. "Quatermass and the Pit") is a top-notch movie.

Brian Donlevy was cast as Quatermass because it was part of the deal with their American distributor. They wanted a Yank to appeal to that market, and Donlevy was under contract.
Actually, his casting was a big point of contention between director Guest and writer Kneale. Guest liked Donlevy's straightforward, no-nonsense approach, while Kneale felt that he had no handle on the character at all.
