And as the Laser Disc market petered out so quickly, just
after the LD Special Ed. release of the same. That was supposed
to be the very final release of the trilogy, forever.
.
Then the new DVD format came out. And of course, that promise
didn't hold to a format change. But what Lucas did do, was
to so alter the originals, that he could still claim that
the previous Special Ed. SW on LDs, hadn't been rereleased,
onto DVDs. Now, apparently that's not even going to hold
true anymore. None of which bother me in the slightest.
I never owned a single LD player or disc. Either I forsaw
it's demise comming. Or the format was too over priced, over
the VHS format. And the quality wasn't all THAT much better,
for LDs. And besides, Tvs weren't even capable of handling
digital inputs then, even if LD players outputed them
(which I've never heard that they did).
.
Now I don't know how "original" the next DVD release of
SW-4 is going to be. I remember that Jabba the Hut was
originally filmed as a man. But that footage wasn't even
used in that movie. So will the next release have no Jabba,
so it doesn't conflict with Episode 6? Plus there are all
the "unfinished" effects shots, which didn't get finished
until the first DVD release of Episode 4. Like the Falcon
landing on the forest moon, before the final battle. In
the original, we just got to stare at where the Falcon would
have been, if they had put it in. It always left me feeling
a bit empty. Like, "am I missing the significance of this shot?"
.
Will releasing the original, unedited, "Han shoots first"
version, mean leaving out changes that actually help complete
the movie? But don't alter character or plot interpretations.
I quess we'll have to wait and see.
