By "key" shows, they mean ones that (supposedly) advance the "narrative" of the show, like "Rocketship X-M" (Frank introduced, Kevin staets as Tom Servo) or "Night of the Blood Beast" (first with Pearl as regular). Problem is, you can't put all those eps in one set. It makes better financial sense to space them over time.
