I recently found that someone had uploaded the parts of MST3k episode K18 onto YouTube. And I'm in the process of capturing them all, as I write this. But the very first segment did reveal something that's always been of interest to me. Whether the title was correcting listed in all the guides? Answer: No.
The first reel of the movie reveals it to be "The Million Eyes of SUMURU" (or Sumuru, if you ignore the larger letters used). But in any case, there is no hyphen as appears in many an MST3000 guide.
The IMDB has got the title right, but the character's name as "Su-Muru". The MST3000 ACEG book has it incorrect as "The Million Eyes of Su-Muru". The movie poster, found at www.mst3ktemple.com, has it wrong too. Which is probably what started the confusion in the first place. And many of the online guides I've found over the years also added the hyphen. So it's a mistake that has persisted for a very long time.
Unfortunately, it's a very dim copy (from the DAP archive), and difficult to watch. Not to mention being awful for other reasons, such as it stars Frankie Avalon. So I'm guessing it's a spy spoof movie, like some others that he's done. But I think the humor in "Sumuru" is darker. I can't say until I've seen it all.
I just thought I'd get this title correction out as soon as possible. So if you have your own typed guide files, and want them accurate. Now you know what the movie itself says it is. And I've always believed the film was should be the final authority. Except for that rare case where two "the"s appeared. I wouldn't insist keeping that mistake intact.
Of course the movies may have been retitled, on film, by the likes of Sandy Frank or Film Ventures. But these reels are what Best Brains (or Hair Brains) Inc, had to work with. So that's what we should refer to them as.
