You know things must be bad with the US economy... when Gamera clips survive on Youtube for more than a couple weeks, with getting the bring down notice. Usually, I stumble on these things a week late, and barely have time to download (or watch) a few parts, before the whole thing vanishes. But recently, I've managed to see the entire 10 to 12 parts of some Gamera episodes of season zero (KTMA) and season three of MST3k. And last time I checked, they're still there. So where are the sharks? I mean those who troll the internet, looking for copyrights violations? Have they found something more important to worry about? Like their home mortgages or business loans? So apparently, economic disaster equals freedom of expression (with less legal hassles).
MST3k got started during the post-Reagan years. And mainly flourished during the Clinton era. Only to be canceled during the Bush-2 era. Now, with Obama running things, and the US economy on the skids. Maybe MST3k could make a comeback, in some new broadcasted form. Either on the web, or some of the new Digital Tv channels. I wonder if Jim Mallon even tries to get any Tv syndication contracts, anymore? Off Beat Cinema, out of Buffalo NY, seems to be doing fine. They just recently ran their "Teenage Caveman" episode on my local RTN channel. Apparently Roger Corman doesn't refuse them to use his film, as long as they don't pick it to pieces. Roger C. and Sandy Frank. What gives with these ego cases? Can't they own up to being the hacks that they are? Well maybe they'll go broke enough now, that they'll welcome even royalties from those that want to ridicule their worst films. I would love to see the MST3k Vol.13 be an all Corman film collection. So far they've been conspicuously absent from the DVD sets.
