: And this week's selection is...
:
: "The Film Crew: The Giant of
: Marathon"
This one pretty much runs according to the template set by most of the Hercules movies seen on MST3K. There's the gallant hero (Phillipides, played by a clean-shaven Steve Reeves), a villainous traitor (Teocritus), a good girl in love with the hero (Andromeda) and a bad girl in love with the hero (Karis). There are the usual wrestling matches, spear throwing, sword fighting and such like. There's a sort-of reference to the inspiration of the modern marathon. But, basically, we've seen it all before. Reeves is OK, but here he's playing a mere mortal rather than a demi-god, so he's not as interesting.
The Film Crew does fine, though, with great riffing and a lunchtime skit regarding the movie's depiction of the Battle of Marathon. Funny stuff, with an extra apology from Mike and a special guest commentator. I wish they'd done more of these releases.
Good experience this week.
