I remember being a bit stunned when he showed up on Star Trek the next generation, as one of the three frozen humans from the 21th century. And his character was argumentative and pushy in that series. I really don't think he knows how to play a nice guy. They just try and tailor his acting style to the plot. Or typecast him from the start.
The "nicest" I've ever remember his characters being, was on the old B&W Outer Limits series. In an episode called "The Borderland". That's the one were they use a power station to try and crossover into another dimension. Maybe into a parallel universe. And in another episode called "The Probe", two years later. I liked that one too.
