Whenever I would go to some scifi convention, where they'd "take a vote" on the worst movie to show. This one was usually the most voted (hands up) of the bunch. But then, they never had that many to choose from. And never seem to have my choice of worst (back then) of "Beast of Yucca Flats". And of course, nobody there (including myself) had seen or known about "Manos".
So "Plan 9" always seems to enjoy this ranking as "worst scifi movie", even after MST3k had aired Manos. I personally don't think "Plan 9" is even 2nd worst. But it's definitely in the top (or bottom?) five. I guess it depends on what "gets to you". Bad actors, a bad script, totally inept direction, or incredible low production values. For me, it's having every scene's actions explained with narration, as it's happening. As if the director thought the viewers were too stupid to figure it out. So you hear "so and so gets out of the car..." as he gets out of the car!
If there's going to be narration, I prefer it to supply information or a viewpoint that isn't so obvious.
Hard to say what's wrong with Ed Wood movies, since so much of them is wrong. But at least he had enthusiasm or a vision. And you often got a chuckle at how bad a scene was. But some other scifi movies, like "Manos" and "BoYF" just leaves one asking oneself, "why did I even watch this?"
Anyway, I think somebody influential ought declare "Plan 9" the 2nd (if not 3rd) worst scifi movie. At least for now. -Dex-
