I'm trying to get some clarification on some information on a page at this site that discusses lethal white, albinoism, and sunburning of creams.
While I'm not stupid enough to believe these horses were albino (the complete lack of pigment) -- but I had the pleasure of working with 3 American White Drafts (NOT to be confused with American Cream Drafts) when I worked at Ringling Bros -owned by Carlos Svenson.
From what I understand, these horses were obtained from a single breeder in California who produces what he calls American White Drafts. They had pink pigment skin with NO dark spots anywhere, WHITE coat, mane, and tail (and I mean really white, no cream tone at all).
And they DID sunburn on their back, rump, neck and faces -- but when I read the page I described above, it made it sound like this is impossible -- that only the pink pigment of markings can sunburn, and that the pink pigment of cream colored horses can not. Or did I read this wrong?
We used these horses for vaulting, so I had to be very vigilant about putting sunblock on their entire bodies or they could not work. A sunburn on the back makes it impossible to put the vaulting pad on and work. They truly did sunburn.
Or am I just not understanding the webpage correctly. I have pictures of these horses, but no scanner.
Thank you,
Rebecca Fouts
