Letter from Gray Spence
Dear Friends .... I hope this e-mail finds you well and looking forward to a wonderful summer. The e-mail below and the attachments are self explanatory and give a brief overview of my ongoing fight with ALS since my retirement from the military.
I have been involved with this event since 2001 and feel that due to the advancement of my illness that this will be my last year to participate actively in this event.
Thanks to my family and friends like yourselves, our team has been extremely successful in our fund raising endeavors. As this is my last year to participate as Team Spence, I would like to encourage you to either join me for the 2008 Walk for ALS and/or consider submitting a pledge for support on my website ( http://www.als.ca/events/mysite.aspx?fid=1620) and/or use the attached pledge form to solicit pledges/donation from your family, friends and business acquaintances.
Upon receiving this letter please feel free to forward this email to your list of family and friends in your address book. I would like to encourage you to add your own comments to your friends to explain how you are involved in this event and that you would appreciate any support that they can give.
I wish to thank you all personally for your continued support and lets have a very successful fundraiser for Team Spence in support of the 2008 Walk for ALS.
Sincerely yours,
Gary & Shannon Spence

2008 Walk for ALS
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It has now been 8 years since I was first diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. Although I have had a few personal set backs over the past year, with the assistance and understanding of family, close friends and special acquaintances, I have been able to move forward with my life and continue to enjoy every day to it’s fullest. For this, I wish to personally thank all of you for your understanding and continued support…
The ALS Society of Canada is sponsoring the eighth annual “Walk for ALS” to raise funding for the ongoing search for a cure, and support for those who have already been diagnosed with this fatal disease. In Halifax, this special event will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2008 with Registration at The Halifax Armouries beginning at 9:00AM and the Walk at 10:00AM on the Halifax Commons area.
I will be walking (thanks to my trusty wheelchair) with my daughter, family, and some of my closest friends as “Team Spence”. Although I would like all my family and friends to join me for this special event, I understand the difficulties associated with time away, travel and costs.
If you are unable to join us for the day, perhaps you will consider sponsoring "Team Spence” with a small pledge, as we walk together for the 2008 Walk for ALS.
I’LL BE WALKING FOR YOU
*** You can donate online by visiting my personal website at: http://www.als.ca/events/mysite.aspx?fid=1620
Note: after making your donation from the website, you can request an official "Tax Receipt", and it will immediately be forwarded to your personal e-mail account, where you can print a copy for your tax files.
Note: the Walk for ALS is as much about increasing public awareness as it is about raising funds. If you feel uncomfortable with sending your pledge electronically, you can make your pledge cheque out to the “ALS Society of Nova Scotia” and mail to the following address:
Mr. Gary R. Spence
114 Regency Park Drive, Unit 106
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
B3S 1R9
We will submit these donations to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia following the completion of the walk, under “Team Spence”. If you need an official receipt, please indicate so when you mail your donation, and one will be mailed to you from the ALS Society of Nova Scotia office (receipts will be issued for donations of at least $20.00).
The ALS Society of Canada Charitable Registration – BIN Number is: 10670-8977-RR0002; and additional Walk information can be found on ALS Canada web site http://www.walkforals.ca
You are all invaluable family members of a very dedicated and hard working Team that exceeded our expectations in the 2007 Walk. For the sixth straight year Team Spence was again the largest fund raising Team in the Maritimes with a total of $13,461.00.
With the funds raised from last years Walk, we were able to purchase much needed specialized equipment for ALS patients in Atlantic Canada (i.e. ventilators, speech aids, wheelchairs, hospital beds), and support ongoing research to battle and eventually defeat this terrible illness.
I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this e-mail and for any donations that you deem appropriate.
Sincerely,
Gary & Shannon Spence
