Bomb Damages Mosque in Anjar
A bomb exploded outside a mosque in eastern Lebanon on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to the building and an adjacent Islamic shrine, security officials said. The motive for the pre-dawn explosion in Anjar was not immediately known, but the mosque and shrine stand on land whose ownership is disputed by the local Armenian community. There were no worshippers in the mosque at the time of the blast, the officials said. Lebanese President Emille Lahoud condemned the attack, issuing a statement saying the perpetrators deserved the "severest punishment". The Armenians, who number about 3,000 in Anjar, claim the mosque and shrine were illegally built on Armenian property in the town. The Muslim Sunnis who use the mosque reject the charge. The Armenians, who form the majority in Anjar, first came to the district in the 1920s. The land dispute has caused tension in the past, including incidents of uprooting trees. The town is close to the Syrian border and is mostly controlled by Syrian soldiers. The headquarters of Syrian military intelligence in Lebanon stands on the outskirts of Anjar. Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon where it maintains some 20,000 troops.(AP)
