Will was already rapper/singer when he started Fresh Prince, he was with Jazz's character (Jeff Townes) in real life, they were known as "Dj Jazzy Jef and the Fresh Prince" which is what probably influenced the title of the show, and adding Jazz's character. as for Ashley, i don't think she had any prior experience in sitcoms/movies, so i don't know how she got the role.
