The easiest way to avoid regrets is to ask yourself this question, "If not now, when?" It's a powerful way to put life and our decisions about how we spend our time into perspective"
Update from the Doctor
Posted by Krista on 6/27/2018, 6:53 am
Well I guess I should be happy as the MRI showed no problems with my spine and "nothing dramatic". There were "arthritic changes" was about all he could say. There could be nerve impingement but nothing that would warrant surgery - again a good thing. |
Regarding my arm/shoulder, he called it "impingement syndrome" and when I google that up, it sounds right. My MRI is scheduled for Aug 31 for that issue.
I got a refill on the muscle relaxants (all they do really is knock me out) and told him Lyrica wasn't doing anything nor was my adventure into CBD oil. When I asked about Cymbalta or Elavil, he said both of them can lead to weight gain so no new drugs at this time. He said he would rather wait and let Dr. Barry diagnose (pain management doctor) on August 1 than introduce any new meds. Makes sense I guess.
I asked could it be fibromyalgia? Possible - Dr Barry to diagnose. OA worsening? Possible. Nerve issue, disc or herniated disc? If so not enough to warranty surgery. Polymyalgia? No. Degen arthritis worsening? Yes. Re shoulder, coracoid impingment - yes.
Asked about referral to rheumatologist - no. I had hoped there were "shots" like Ray gets but not for OA. Back to chiro? No. Back to physio? Maybe.
I asked how I am going to get through pain for the next month and he gave me exercises to do for my arm, told me to take Tylenol, use Voltaren gel and to STOP TEACHING BODY PUMP for a month. He said I can keep "hitting myself on the head with a hammer" (i.e. exercise while injured) or put the hammer down. So, I have to listen and see if this helps. I am done teaching (as long as I can get subs!) from this morning until July 29th. I may have to do this Sunday and if so will do next to no weights (It's a long weekend) but have friends who are helping me out.
Wanted to let you all know how it went. I'm sad but if this helps me get healed and get back to teaching for years to come, it will be worth it. Hard pill to swallow when exercise / teaching classes specifically is a huge part of my life.
Have you tried something as simple

as Vick's Vapor Rub to help with the tingling and pain? Following chemo, I developed what I think is neuropathy in my hands, feet, knees and butt checks. The doctors just blew this off and have never really addressed it. |
I found I get immediate reflief by rubbing Vick's on the areas. I hate waking and having no feeling in my hands or feet, so I apply it before bed.. I know I'm really grasping at straws here for you, but it just might help a bit! Hey, anything is worth trying at this point....and, it's cheap!
Tried it last night

Will keep trying it again this weekend - thanks for the suggestion!|
Worth a shot

I've tried every linament under the sun but gotta admit, have not tried that. Anything is worth a shot! Will get some today and try. Thanks Sue!|

TO KNOW U ARE GETTING SOME HELP. I HATE THINKING OF U IN PAIN. DOES EXERCISE MAKE IT WORSE OR BETTER. LOVE YOU.|
Posted by shirley on 6/28/2018, 5:35 am, in reply to "GLAD"
these things that look like a small pillow that you can put in the microwave or freezer and use on pain areas. they are so worth it.|
Exercise makes it much worse

I have an ice pack and use heating pad at night almost all night. Anything that helps, suggest away |

I'm so sorry to read this. It's HARD to deal with all this stuff. I know this road. Degeneration sucks. I go for an injection in my back tomorrow but my shoulders and hips are hurting so bad. I can't find d a bed I can sleep on. What I'm saying is I UNDERSTAND. If you need to talk I'm here. |
May I ask what muscle relaxers you take. I have Flexeril and rarely take it because I really can't tell I'm taking anything. I hate new meds. My pharmacist has asked me several times to tell the doc because there are more out there and if one is t working you move on...
Flexeril as well
Posted by Krista on 6/28/2018, 6:59 am, in reply to "Krista"
and sad to say but they seem to do nothing. Had one last night and I noticed no difference at all. Hate knowing you're going through pain like this as well and sure hope the injection helps for you. Dr Foster suggested the new doc may give me a "shot" - if he means cortisone, worth a try but the one to my knee and side this year did nothing so gotta admit, I'm not optimistic. |
Let us know how you make out? What are the sure signs of fibro?

Even tho you're bummed, you sound determined to do whatever you need to do. A lot of rule outs is good. I mean knowing what it's not, narrows it down |
Still stinks. Hang in there ttk

I try to soldier on Paula but I have to be honest and say I'm pretty blue and feeling like I'm at the end of my rope most days |

I am so sorry that you didn't get concrete answers and you will have to take time off from your exercise classes. Bummer! I know that it really bothers you to not be teaching those classes since you love it so much. |
Since my husband, my daughter, my mother and I have all had shoulder impingement at one time or another I was kinda wondering the whole time because that is what it sounded like to me, but I am not a doctor. Ice and rest are your friends right now.
Okay, lets turn this around since I hate seeing you down. You can use the time off from upper body exercise to concentrate on your lower body and have the best butt in the gym at the end of summer.
Doc said heat not ice
Posted by Krista on 6/27/2018, 5:07 pm, in reply to "((Krista))"
Weird eh? I will err on the side of caution and do both. I just can't believe it's been 9 MONTHS that this has been going on What do you and your family eventually do? Just ice, rest and it worked itself out? |
And GOOD IDEA re the butt!!!!!!!!
What we do/did
Posted by Delta on 6/27/2018, 7:16 pm, in reply to "Doc said heat not ice"
My husband and daughter had surgery and lots of PT. It worked great for my husband and not so much for my daughter. She does chiro and heat a lot. I just had PT. It's coming back a bit now in my left shoulder/arm, much as you describe, when I type, sew or hold my tablet to read. I still have the PT exercises so I'm doing them again. Use heat sometimes and since I got a TENS/EMS unit I am going to use the EMS on it tonight to see if that helps. My mom just takes Lyrica and opioids. For some reason opioids have never seemed to affect her. They make me check out completely until they wear off, not to mention that my gastro doc very strongly opposes them in my stomach/gut, so they are not an option. Same problem. Four doctors. Four ways of dealing. They all work somewhat, but none of us are completely pain-free forever but we can stay comfortable most of the time. We just have to avoid the causes and do what works for us. I hope you find your comfort zone. |

I feel like I've tried everything but opiods and I'm afraid I would get addicted I appreciate hearing your experiences.|
Iím sorry you didnít get any answers...
Posted by Cindy on 6/27/2018, 9:11 am, in reply to "Update from the Doctor"
But I am hoping you can get some relief. I know how much you love to teach! Hang in there!|
Startling to me to be honest

How a person can have tingling / pain in the arms and hands for over 9 MONTHS on a daily and continual basis and for it to remain a mystery. It honestly behooves me |

Oh dear... sorry it wasn't news that you wanted to hear. I know how much you love your classes. Like you said... it could be the one thing that helps your 'peices & parts' calm down. Try not to worry.. worrying doesn't change one thing. I am sending you a big hug and a prayer too for the healing you want and need. |
I wish there were other meds that could/might help. Would you be willing to take a medicine that has wieght gain as a possible side effect. That is scary for folks like 'us'.
No I wouldn't
Posted by Krista on 6/27/2018, 11:11 am, in reply to "Krista"
Definitely would not be willing to take a medication that could cause weight gain. I've worked way too hard to get to where I am. |
Surely there are other meds - he just doesn't want to prescribe anything else in the time leading up to the specialist.
Thanks my friend for your support - always.

I know this isn't the news you wanted to hear....and I can't blame you. I know how much teaching Body Pumjp means to you, and this is just one big bummer. I'm so sorry the news wasn't more positive/promising. Stay strong! Frustrating and disappointing for sure.|
Thank you for understanding
Posted by Krista on 6/27/2018, 8:12 am, in reply to "Oh, Krista..."
I've got some good team mates that are helping me out - still about 5-6 classes left to get coverage for including Sunday which I will be surprised if I can find anyone. |
Gotta try not to get ahead of myself. My fear is that I could NOT teach this class again and that would really be a big one to swallow. But I have to remember it could always be worse.
Thanks for listening and understanding. I hope he is right.
For the time being,

I guess you just have to BELIEVE - - |
