As far as an increased sheen is concerned, I have two suggestions. Since you were treating a rough finish, you might have used steel wool with Wood Elixir to smooth the surface. This, of course will dull the surface somewhat, but can be brightened with repeated very light applications of Wood Elixir. I have done as many as 10 light coats leaving 2 or more days between treatments. This process will produce a hand-rubbed French polish type of finish. If you desire a still brighter gloss, I recommend using a car wax containing Carnauba wax. It's very tough and polishes brightly.
