It sounds like they are very old and the red stain might be either milk paint or berry stain, both of which are very difficult to remove, especially on oak. I have had some success in removing these dyes with lye (caustic soda). This will also turn the oak dark grey which can be lightened will beach. If you are not familliar with the process, let me know and I will help you through it.
