Mr. Wee
GIS #1379
Brooklyn, NY
Looking for a new home since 11/18/05. Mr. Wee is still available as of May 1 2008!
Because it is illegal to own iguanas within NYC, Mr. Wee must be adopted by someone outside of the city.
Gender: Male
Iguana age: 2004
Size -
SVL: 34"
STL: 11"
Reason for new needing a new home: "We rescued this iguana when he was six months old (small, hence the name), never intending to keep him. I hope to leave the country soon. He is pleasent and tolerant for a juvenile male."
Vet care and health history: "We took him in for a check up with our vet as soon as we got him in the spring of 2004. He was fine then and his last visit, which took place in the summer of 2005, revealed a clean bill of health. Our vet has a lot of experience and knowledge of reptiles. The only injury he has had is a ripped off toe nail. We treated the toe and it has healed nicely. It's only missing the nail. We keep his nails trimmed pretty well."
Diet: "He eats a salad every day of greens and various fruit and veggies. We rotate the greens, such as collards, mustard, dandilion, escarole and chard, with carrots, sweet potato, squash, parsnips, green beans and sprouts. He also gets a little bit of kiwi, stawberries, mango, banana, parsley, and red bell pepper."
Habitat and living conditions: "Mr. Wee spends late spring, summer and early fall seasons at his summer garden bungalo in his Brooklyn back yard. He has a cage (6'x4'x3') full of safe plants, branches, wooden shelters with thatched roofs and a pool where he poops as a healthy iguana should. We change the water every day. Although the plants are safe to eat, we still feed him daily when he's in there. He eats well and has a healthy poop every day. We bring him in when it starts to get too cool(ocaisionally in the summer for the night even as well). At that time (now), he lives in the bathroom, roaming the branches and 2x6's above our heads. His plastic pool is in our tub. He can climb down into it. The temp is from 80% to 95%. Unfortunately, he has no window and I'm sure he's bored. However, he does have the neccesary uv light, a subtle night light, partial humidity, plants and places to be alone."
Temperament: "Mr. Wee has never been one to rush over to cuddle up to you but he is tolerant for a male. He will sit on my knee or shoulder while I rub under his chin or even without touching him at all. He is very curious, active, alert and does all the things I read about that make for a healthy iguana. He does not like to be picked up. He runs every time but has never bitten me. He will occaisionally swat his tail lightly while I'm trying to catch him."
Handling: "He had not been handled at all at six mounths old and as a result, he was mortified of people. Since we've had him (spring of 2004), we have handled him a few times a week for short periods of time (5 minutes to 1/2 hour at a time. During our time in the bathroom together (it's small) he doesn't seem to mind our presence at close range. We have tried to give him a comfortable amount of space while slowly getting him used to being touched and held. He's pretty submisive once he's in hand."
House broken: "Yes - He goes in the tub that I've mentioned or on newspaper under a high branch in the bathroom."
Included with iguana: "Mr. Wee may take all of his belongings with him when he goes, including the 6'x4'x3' cage (it also has 3' legs)."
Willing to ship iguana: no
Other information: "We have worked hard to keep this iguana as healthy and happy as possible. He is in good shape physically and mentally as far as I can tell. I would keep him if I thought I could provide for him as well as he should be provided for."
