Reno
GIS #1474
Culver City, CA
Looking for a new home since 3/19/06. Reno is still available as of October 2008!
Gender: Female
Iguana age: approx 5 yrs
Size -
SVL: 15 inches
STL: 33 inches
Reason for new needing a new home: Reno was taken into foster care in October 2004. She was found loose outside and her captor surrendered her into our care. We believe she was "on the run" for at least 3 months, as we were informed she had been spotted outside in the same area as early as July 2004. We never found the owner; we can only assume she was released or escaped from her previous home.
Vet care and health history: Reno was taken to the vet shortly after we acquired her, for a wellness check and fecal test. Her initial fecal test came back clean, which was surprising since she had been living outside, eating who knows what. She passed several pebbles in the bathtub the first week we had her, with no long-term effects (that we know of). She is missing almost 1/3 of her tail, which has since healed but did not regrow. She has had additional fecal tests 1-2 times per year, and has been treated once for internal parasites. She laid 29 infertile eggs in January 2005 and 44 infertile eggs in July 2006; with no complications. She was taken to the vet afterward (both times) for an x-ray to confirm that all eggs were laid. She was spayed in November 2006, so no more egg season!
Diet: Reno's diet consists of the following greens, veggies, and fruits: collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, endive, escarole, watercress, snap peas, snow peas, green beans, parsnip, butternut squash, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and mango.
Habitat and living conditions: Reno resides in a 5' H x 4' L x 27" W enclosure with wood frame and coated hardware cloth (screen) sides and top. The front consists of two doors for easy access to the entire cage. The basking shelves are wire closet shelves which are adjustable up and down. The floor is linoleum, which I usually cover with newspaper to catch spilled food and the occasional potty accident. The cage is on 4 wheels. For heat and UVB, she has a 100W SB Mega-Ray mercury vapor bulb (produces heat + UVB) along with a 60W Mega-Ray Heat Projector for supplemental/nighttime heat. She also basks outside in natural, unfiltered sunlight for about an hour daily.
Temperament: Reno is fine with being held but does not always enjoy being petted (she will sometimes bob her head in protest), though she does like head massages. Overall, I consider her to be pretty tame.
Handling: Reno has been handled daily the entire time we've had her.
House broken: Yes. For the first 2 years we had her, Reno had intermittent runny stool and would not hold her poop for the bathtub or go exclusively in the pool in her cage. She would also walk through her poop and track it all over her cage - this could have been a habit, possibly from being kept in too small a cage in her previous home, and maybe being "used" to having her feces all around. It is also possible that the pebbles (and who knows what else) she consumed while loose outside may have caused irritation in her bowels. She is now potty trained, though she needs to be tub-pooped twice daily to avoid any "accidents". She really loves the shower.
Anything included with iguana: We will consider selling her cage & equipment for a small price if the new owner does not already have adequate accommodations.
Willing to ship iguana: No
Other information: Reno is lucky to have been captured before winter came, as she would not have survived otherwise. We are looking for a good, permanent home for an iguana very deserving of a second chance.
