GIS# 1903
Looking for a home since 4/12/08
Iguana name: Rexi
Iguana age: 9 years (2000)
STL: 48"
Gender: Female
Reason for new needing a new home: I rescued this iguana from a dumpster in a 10 gallon aquarium in 2000, at 15" STL. I have been trying to adopt her out ever since. I never intended to own an iguana. We also have 5 cats , all of which are rescues. We are trying to reduce the number of animals in our home. I love them, but this is not Noahs Ark.
Vet care and health history: She has received excellent veterinary care and is in very good health. However, she had a dog bite on her back when she was found 8 years ago. This left her spine a little crooked, and she has a limping gait with her hind right leg.
Diet: Greens, vegeteables and fruit (the Kaplan diet)
Habitat and living conditions: We live in Tampa, FL. In the winter (4 months), she lives in an indoor enclosure which is built from the plans in James Hatfield's book: "Green Iguana Owners Manual". it is 4x4x8, equipped with spots and UV, a warm air humidifier, and a water litter box. During the rest of the year, she lives in an outdoor enclosure which is circular. Diameter 15', height 9'. It is half in the shade, half in the sunlight.
Temperament: She is very calm and tame. I have handled her daily for 8 years. She has never been around other iguanas or dogs, but gets along well with the cats. They leave her alone since she is bigger than they are :-)
Handling: Daily. She is very tame.
House broken: Yes
House breaking details: She is trained to go in the sink. For almost 4 years I pooped her in a utility sink in the garage daily. However, since I built the indoor enclosure, she has learned to poop in a litter box filled with water. in the outdoor enclosure, I have a big litter box filled with water set in the ground (2' x 4' x 12"), which she poops in. I empty it out daily and replace the water.
Anything included with iguana: yes
Included with iguana: Yes, everything. Both indoor and outdoor enclosures, and the lights, dishes, and book. However, be warned the enclosures are very large and will be difficult to transport. The indoor enclosure breaks down into 6 pieces (4 walls + ceiling and floor). the outdoor cage breaks down into 4x8 sheets of steel caging. If someone is within driving distance and QUALIFIED to care for Rexi, I will assist with trnasport and re-assembly of the enclosures.
Willing to ship iguana: no
Other information: I have put a great deal of effort into this Iguana. I am hesitant to give her to just anybody. however if there is someone out there who is qualified (meaning you understand the work involved) and really wants to adopt her. I will work with them to get her set up at their home. She is a great iguana with an interesting personality.
