Believe that they are not related. Diverticulitis can be diagnosed following colonscopic examination - the interior of the bowel having a series of 'pockets' or 'ridges'. Food may become trapped in the pockets and there may be excessive gas etc.
Understand that diverticulitis more prelevant amongst older people.
Suggest that you discuss this with your GP. Also Google diverticulitis and you should be able to view images of bowel affected by this complaint.
