Such a shame to have that bad experience. I dread it as I have been extremely fortunate over the last 14 years in not being glutened except for eating a gluten biscuit by mistake in my first few weeks. When away visiting family in GB I have a rule about eating out the night before leaving, it always has to be somewhere tried and tested, impossible if somewhere new but as I am going be driving hundreds of miles and sitting in a ferry for several hours it is important to minimise the risk. It would be best to advise the restaurant of your reaction and that something went wrong and see how they respond.
