Frankly I feel that the current system is possibly the best value for the NHS, given the £25 million annual cost.
1. It does not have to carry stock of limited shelf-life items.
2. It doesn't need storage space.
3. It doesn't need a stock control system.
4. It doesn't need a distribution system.
5. It has no staff costs.
This is also why getting rid of GF prescriptions is so attractive - it is a nil cost option. (Of course it pays no attention to later costs of associated problems.)
