There is a huge contamination risk if you eat normal oats - they really do need to have a gluten free declaration. (Oats are often grown in fields that have had wheat in them and the wheat reseeds itself and gets harvested in with the oats. Normal oats can have large quantities of wheat in it.
Also, some coeliacs just can't tolerate oats at all and most should not have more than 50g per day.
Many consultants say not to eat oats until 6 months to a year into the gluten free diet (to allow for healing first). However, my son's consultant said to eat oats from the start and then he would have a second endoscopy after 1 year to check for any residual damage. His second endoscopy should complete healing.
