Believe me it is a thousand times easier now than it was 27 years ago! Despite all the legal requirements now to help you there is still a lot of judgement involved. Not all foods that may be GF are marked as such so unless you want to stick rigidly to GF marked foods you will have to study the label to see if you feel happy eating it, of course if there are any GF content they are legally obliged to highlight these. Look for 'made in a factory containing gluten' or similar, personally I avoid these.
Also be careful at the free from counter, not all free from if free from gluten, free from wheat for instance is not necessarily GF.
Eating out is the bigger problem, standards of understanding vary greatly as the recent BBC program with Gloria Hunniford etc showed.
However it is possible to live as near a normal life as is possible. Following that BBC program I keep reminding myself that I am lucky not to suffer from a life threatening food allergy.
