For eating out - do your research. Ask on this board, look on the internet (e.g. put gluten free near xyz into google), look on the websites of the local restaurants, phone restaurants and ask to talk to the chef etc AND always have a back up gluten free sandwich, GF just add water rice pot, GF snack etc.
There are quite a few chains that do a reasonable GF selection. Some are accredited by Coeliac UK (which means that they should be an even safer option). Good choices are McDonalds (order a burger without the bun and take your own bun), Nandos, Pizza Express (Coeliac UK accredited), Zizzis, Prezzo, Gourmet Burger Kitchen (have GF buns and also do GF vegetarian burgers), Carluccios, Toby Carvery (have only the vegetarian gravy), Pizza Hut, Wagamama, Pret a Manger (usually do soup and porridge and salads), M&S (cafe and sandwiches), Leons and Pod.
