Well, I could tell you that you shouldn't get so excited about it, because it is just a game, but the thing is, that it isn't just a game, is it? One of my deep dark secrets is, that I love soccer. (Don't tell anyone, I'll loose gothpoints) The world championships are taking place in Germany at the moment. At those national soccergames, you will see the fans painted in the national colours, wearing national symbols, like vikinghelmets and sombreros and things like that. Until reasently the German fans have been the most normal looking, because they have been afraid of wearing something, that would be offending to someone, according to Germanys past as the aggressor in two worldwars. But now finally, this time they have gone crazy like all the other fans. A lot of them wearing mohawk wigs in the German colours. This means a lot to the Germans, helping them getting rid of the trauma all Germans are carrying, as one of the most hated people in the world, or at least in Europe. I think they deserve it, the latest generations have made a great country out of Germany. Some years ago France won the worldchampionship. France has been the country in Europe with the biggest race issues. Huge ghettos, and riots from time to time. Really big riots with a lot of fighting in the streets and car burnings and stuff like that. The team who won the championship, was a racial mixed team. White French, and a lot of people from their former colonies in Algier and Chad and other African countries. Now, I think you have to be from Europe to fully understand what happens, if a country wins the worldchampionship. Hundreds of thousands of people dancing in the streets, bathing in fountains, driving around in cars with the national flag waving from the windows. People hug and kiss total strangers. Everybody is your best friend. A total manical countrywide euforia. Of course the euforia doesn't last, but the pride does, and more important, the feeling of having something in common. This really helped France in their racial problems, it's a historical fact. The African countries partaking in the championships, don't have much of a chance to win the championship, but only playing well or perhaps even beating one of the big countries like Brazil or Italy, gives the people of that country a lot of selfesteem and helps them in their daily struggle. And it puts their country on the map, opening opportunities of international trade. Some years ago little Denmark won the European championship in a final against Germany, who always has been one of the very best teams in the world. At this time Denmark had just put some political resolutions out for a peoples referendum. ( sorry if I'm using the wrong words here, but you get the meaning I hope) This was the first time something like this happened in EU. Usually the governments just took the decisions. Normally it wouldn't have been taken very seriously, only the usual rebellious stuff from the Danes, and the big countries would have spanked Denmark in line again, without much international interest in the case. But now it was suddenly different. Who are those people from that tiny country going up against the traditions and the decisions of EU, and at the same time winning the championship? It is ridiculous that these things should have anything to do with each other, but it had. The chairman ( I think he was German at that time hehe) expressed his worries, that the popularity wave Denmark was riding on, would cause the people of other countries to start demanding peoples referendums (referenda?) about major political resolotions, and that this would be a big obstacle for the further political work against a united Europe. And he was right, that was actually what happened, and at the moment all work towards a united states of Europe is on full stop, because France and Holland have voted against some resolutions.I guess icehockey, football, basketball and baseball are as important to the Americans, as soccer is to the Europeans. It is strange that sports can call forth such strong emotions. And it is only the team sports that do it. I have a theory, that it is some deeply burried instincts, ( or perhaps not so deep) that goes all the way back to the stoneage. The warriors of our tribe fighting against the warriors of the other tribe. It does cause some trouble, but in the big picture I think it is a positive thing, as long as we remember, that it is about having a good time. Lately I really have been enjoying the pictures from Germany, with fans from all over the world having a good time together. Even people from Iran having a good time with Europeans and Americans. It helps us remember, that most of the people in the countries we are being told to fear and hate, are people just like us, with the same hopes and fears, and the same wish to live a life in peace.
