Well..Actually a lot of European towns do look like that.
But there is a big difference between small houses and narrow streets, inhabited by real people, mostly those who don't have too much money. I'm not saying that living in those small cold and damp houses was a good thing, there was a lot of poverty there, but those places were alive. People knew each other and were helping each other.
Now they have been renovated (sp?), the poor have been kicked out, and sent to some surburban concrete, and the houses they used to live in, have been painted in the right colours and filled with all kinds of luxury, and are being turned into fashionable places, rich people will pay insane amounts of money for.
And nothing really lives there anymore.
Admitted, there are no streetwalkers anymore, there are no junkies in the gutter or drunks pissing in the corners; but there are no students writing poetry in their cold chambers either, no revolutionary groups plotting for a new society, no friendliness. People giving the streetwalker a hot cup of coffe, the junkie a buck or let the drunk watch the perambulator while you do your shopping at the local merchant store. There ARE no stores, only those selling souvenirs. They are everywhere.
It would have been great if the town council had made the places better to live in, for those who already lived there, but to kick them out and turn these quarters into a mockery of what they once were, really makes me angry.
I can't really say Hollywood sets me up. I think here in Europe most people still think of Hollywood as a glamorrous place. I don't know enough about it, to really have an opinion.
Besides I think Europe soon will be more American than America itself. As long it is American, it is cool.
