Just thought I might add in my 2cents I find it funny, ppl who are not Goths try to explain & define it while ppl whom truelly are really don't pay to much attention to defining it, we just know, some of us kind of always have but didn't realize it until we joined in the subculture. I think that perhaps it's time that changes. We are Goth, shouldn't we have a say in what it is? Well, here's what I've concluded. Here's a link to my site if you want to read more. Never know, it may come in handy. I'll be posting about the diffrent types of Goths which I believe will help explain what is defined as Goth & such. There's atleast/around 15 difrent kinds of Goths within the subculture. http://www.xanga.com/TrueGothicLight Here's part of a post I made, explains the origins & what the basics of a Goth is. Goth Okay, first off you might be thinking "If You're Goth, then where were you when they invade Rome?" but there is a good explanation for that. It all started when the Goths(the ones that did attack Rome). Ppl started "miss using" the term Gothic in a way in which it meant barbaric. Centuries later when they built Gothic Cathedrals Goth was used to describe them. I recall an author stating since it allowed quite a bit of sunlight in the term was used to mean angelic/beauty & enlightening, however, I don't think that would be the case. One would have to admit that it would look rather spooky at night more than likely, but in a beautiful way. Again, I recall an author stating, that when they grew old the term meant gloomy & such, but as I stated, it would kinda already look like that at night. Then there comes the Gothic Writers(There were Gothic Artiest, however, they did not play as big a role in the origination of the modern day subculture, I mean hey, how are you suppose to make a movie out of a picture, though you can have a movie inspired by one, but not really based upon, unlike a novel if you know what I mean). Supposedly they've drawn inspiration from these places. Creating dark romantic characters that lurk in such dark dwellings When motion pictures were made, the horror/tragic romance & novels were put on the big screen(so I guess in a way it kinda meant dark romance). Most of the novels indeed revolve around vampires, likens, & such creatures. They were portrayed with white faces & the stereotypical Gothic makeup. So I guess Gothic Film(s/ Making) were/was created. Supposedly some of the Post Punks were accidentally portrayed as Goth due to there white face makeup & such that reminded ppl of the old horror films, however they did have somewhat of a different music style creating it's own genre. Thus the genre/ term Goth was born in 1979. In 1980 it became an official subculture. In the later 80's Goth became so popular & widespread that in parts of the world the media's of those area's would referred to it as a "pop culture". I guess in short you could say that the term originated from the Goths but the culture itself has nothing to do with the Germanic Tribe. The subculture Goth was infact inspired from Gothic or Gothic is Goth aesthetic(so to speak), follow? Unlike the Goth's relatives Punks, Goth is not about rebelion or expressing rebelion. Goths express beauty, patience, & intellectuality. To be a Goth-there are five components that make up a Goth along with a basic strive & need we all share. The strive all Goths share is the need to create & the need for knowledge, without the strive one is not really a Goth, even with the five basic components, but perhaps an understanding outsider. The five components are literature, music, style, art, & (if willing) the(style of) make up. What draws one into the Goth scene may vary. For me it was the style, art, & literature, for someone I know it was all about the music, however, we still share all the components. Some may be more dominant than other's. When you think of it, however, all Goths share the art component quite strongly due to the need to create. Whether through drawing, photography, poetry, song writing, story weaving, painting, even dancing. When you think of it one could describe Goth in one word as Art. Music, literature, art(drawing, painting & such, that kind), are all components of Art.
