It's usually set during the Industrial Revolution with steam powered technology but taken further from what was developed in history. The genre takes it's influences from Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. People are becoming more interested in this genre and are trying to make a subculture out of it through fashion (think Neo-Victorian) and music (like Abney Park).
