    I find that, for all the talk of openmindedness and progressivness, gender roles remain almost exactly the same through all subcultures.

    Sure, styles of dress might be different, and it's more socially acceptable, for example, for the males to wear makeup, and non-hetero sexualities may appear more common and tolerated, but I think a lot of this is just part of the image. It's "hip and edgy" to play with gender and sexuality, but at the end of the day, most are just like the general population, clinging to tired gender roles.
