Well there is no licensing board for goths, but here's my story, and you can judge for yourself, since some people don't consider me a goth:
Dark Shadows began in 1966 and that was my first cherished memory. I remember watching the show from earliest childhood, and my mother played classical music, rock music and had candle holders all through the house, always lit.
In grade school while other kids were painting people and making cig asshtrays, I painted haunted houses and made skulls. Looking back, I laugh my rear off when I think about that.
I was always an outcast, and had no friends, so while other people read Eddie and the Cruisers, I read about ghosts and haunted houses and became an expert on folklore vampires by about 8 years old.
The first hearse I ever saw inspired me to buy one, which I did, and I also bought a casket and started a photo set with them in the local haunted house at Halloween, which I've beend oing for years. Other people have trucks and Kia's I have now a hearse and a gothed out 59 Ford which I drive all the time.
I got into listening to Midnight Syndicate as a sound track for my business, along with Nightwish, now my gothic albums outnumber everything else four to one. My nightlight is one of my props, a skeleton bride in a beautiful dress with a blacklight in her. She is surrounded by candles and posters of angels and old houses.
As for my clothes, I found a long black overcoat and counted the hours till it arrived, and now I hardly wear anything else. I started wearing chokers after my daughter got into them and I thought they looked cool, so I custom made some.
It was after all of this that I found out there was something known as a Gothic culture. Someone told me about a goth club here, and one night was all it took to turn it into my main hangout.
I get laughed at, but I laugh back. I don't take life or myself too seriously.
