The development of goth is complex

I don't why people keep trying to reduce down what goth is, isn't, how it developed and what influenced it. There are various facets of the goth subculture and different influences depending which facets you are focusing on, which books/sources you are reading and which country/ies you are focusing on. Subcultures are fun and interesting and I like to keep things tongue-in-cheek and not take things too seriously, though I'm not 100% sure what is meant by the "subcultures are funny" comment. I like reading sociological analyses of the goth subculture as well. I find those interesting, in particular ones written by insiders. I once stumbled across a lecture on goth written by an outsider which hadn't been as well researched as I would like to see (cue slides on Marilyn Manson and metalhead fashion labelled as goth, you get the picture).

Goth is one of my favourite genres of music and I enjoy going to goth clubs and gigs when I can. I love subcultural crossovers like steampunk. I don't however feel I have to live up to a 'goth identity' 24/7. It's just one of my interests. When it comes to literature I like the odd gothic novel but on the whole I prefer sci-fi and books focused on dystopian societies, and most of the tv/films I watch are sci-fi as well.

mmm my post has meandered a bit but I wanted to make a more general comment about things discussed in this thread rather than a direct response to anything anyone said in particular. *shrugs* meh.

: Yet, most of books about the subculture
: mention literary Gothic as well, as it
: shares the exactly same tropes.
    :
: Wicca in the other hand didn't when Gardner
: came up with it. I'd think it was then more
    : proto-hippie influenced, aesthetically as
    : well.
    :
: Subcultures, as any artistic movements takes
: influences from many places. So I cannot say
: that this or that is absolutely related to
: the subculture. It is just something that is
: often mentioned and similar in name and
    : style.
    :
: Any argument about subculture is silly, as
: subcultures themselves are pretty funny.
