Actually you want them as dry as possible and placed in airtight bags. I however do not recommend doing this. I recently bought some bags that I can suck the air out of... Basically I cut/wash off the greens, press the excess water out of them.. and bag them. I might toss in an extra paper towel to absorb water. Then suck the air out. Its the bacteria in the air of the bags that makes them go bad - as well as the temperature you keep them at.
As for butternut squash that stuff should be lasting you forever. Infact you should be able to put one of those in someplace thats a moderate area of your house.. like a basement.. and come back to it in spring and still eat it - they last a very long time. When I use them I do naturally have a higher consumption rate of veggies and greens and you do considering I have 3 20 something pounders and a 100 lb tort.. bye bye greens. My congo eats a bit as well.
