I have sliding doors on my cage, and I have mixed feelings about them. They do save space, and have a cleaner look, but you can only access half the cage and as far as you can reach at one time. It's OK for a little guy, but I could see having problems moving a big Ig in and out of double doors, especially if it's being uncooperative. It's also a big air leak, so if your in a cooler climate it could be an issue.
I also agree starting with a smaller tank isn't a bad idea. They're fast as heck when you're trying to chase them down. More space is not necessarily better when you're taming.
