You could try it if you like. I don't use gloves. Many do.
Trust is the thing you are trying to gain. Picture how you would gain the trust of a wild squirrel. You would put food out and he would come to it. And you would sit quietly near, and then nearer. And you would show him that he could come near you and you wouldn't grab him. Do the small room together idea and read a book. Show him that he can walk all around you without you grabbing him. When you do need to put him away do it gently and quickly to avoid a chase.
Remember that when he's in his enclosure he is in his territory. That's not the place to get to know each other.
