They use them on "sumps" in fish tanks. They stick them on the end of PVC tube etc and they capture carbage comming out of the pipe and into the filter. You can try some foam with plenty of holes in it on the inlet the filter sock is better off on outlet so it does not get sucked into the impeller.
Having fish, I always try to keep larger particles out of the impeller as they can get loud and ruined.
