hello all, first of all let me thank you for taking time out to read this and i appreciate any comments... i have acquired an African Red Iguana recently, (i had bought it for a friend online since that is what they said they wanted for a gift, and I wound up "adopting" her since my friend didn't think i would really get it) Anyways, it will be 1 year on St.Patrick's Day 2016 that i have had her now, and i have done TONS of research and there is very little info that i WANT to believe since ALOT of stuff is contradicting, i just want to know what is a good way to ensure that i am doing everything correct i can, so here is what i normally do FOOD:baby kale, bok choy, pak choy, red chard, carrot shreds, colored bell peppers, and on occasion bananas. its hard to measure 16oz of food to measure the calcium and vitamin powder, since She (the iguana) doesn't eat a whole food dish of veggies, but i do my best to measure the right amount. She adores carrots and enjoys yellow peppers, she is picky on her green veggies though. i mist her at least 1 time to where she is visibly damp and i mist her food as well, i have her in a 40gal "bearded dragon" terrarium for now with her daylight and nightlight on top of the metal lid where she cannot come into direct contact with them. HABITAT I GOT FOR HER NOW
i give her 8 hours of daylight, 8 hours of no light then 8 hours of nightlight, then repeat every day. she is about 16in-20in long from snout to tail, (body from snout to beginning of tail is about 3in-4in)(tail is 10in-16in) and her entire tail is still intact. i am led to believe She is a female due to her large femoral pores on her inner thighs. she doesn't like newspaper or any of the "appropriate" flooring so i got a fleece camouflage throw and She LOVES it. plus its easier to clean, i "bathe" her about once a week, in warm water and i use rubbing alcohol to wipe out the glass inside her habitat. how do you age an iguana??? what kind of veggies can you get from Wal-Mart that don't go bad really fast she can eat? and how much fruit should she be able to eat? and what is a correct consumption for her on a daily basis?
(sometimes she only eats every other day) i allow her to roam around in my bedroom, which is sort of bare considering i just moved, but very very safe and "iggy" proof. She has done very well considering how feral she was when i first received her in the mail. i know they don't really "drink" water but sometimes while i am spraying her with her water she will lick the drops off the window or drink it off the floor of her habitat but she refuses to drink from any bowl or container i provide her with. (She even will lap up the water from the spray nozzle on the spray bottle) Also can "iggy's" get "colds?"
sometimes she sneezes and makes a slight squeak when she does but it hasn't seemed to phase her at all. i am in the process of having Her NEW habitat being built, it will be 36-38" wide and about 6.5-7ft tall, (like the china cabinet habitats, but built from scratch) i plan on putting either linoleum or artificial turf on the bottom with branches, ladders, and lots of "iggy" safe decor, with 2 holes in the top for her lights. (please let me know your personal experiences and trial and errors, so that i may be able to learn as much as i can from "real iguana owners".one more thing, when i got her she was a bright red with a lime green tummy, now the older she get she gets greener and her head is almost a purpley, blue-grey, with a slight brown green tint, her body is like a dirty brown-red with a dirty green hint, and her tail is much redder with bands from her neck down almost like a boa or python. what can i do to make her bright red again, and what is the best way to know your iggy is as healthy as possible???
(SORRY I KNOW IT IS SORT OF SCATTERED, BUT I HAVE A SEMI SCATTERED BRAIN RIGHT NOW STRESSING TRYING TO FIND "CORRECT AND ACCURATE" INFO FROM PEOPLE WITH REAL EXPERIENCE INSTEAD OF JUST BOOK KNOWLEDGE.) THANKS SO MUCH!!!- STORMY W.
