Does anyone know of a source for information about Alligator Lizards? Or can you point me to someone who does? I did a long search and found only one semi-active forum on them.
i obtained one against my will when I was chopping and banging on an out building. He rolled out from behind the siding onto a debris pile. He was in hibernation and it took two weeks of time to wake up in a viv set up to mimic summer for him. It turns out he has an obvious hip injury, so I can never let him go.
I'm worried that I'm giving him too much UVB. When I was a kid I never saw one exposed on a rock or tree trunk basking. Of all those I found, they were either running through deep grass in an oak woodland, or they were found under boards stored next to houses. I also am not comfortable with how he spends his days. He prefers to stay in his hide almost all day. But he does come out and is active just as the sun is starting to go down. There is a word for that - crepuscular maybe? I know he spends time in his hide at night, but i don't know how much time. Once in a while I see him eat a cricket. I think he eats four or five adults/week. If I let the last of his water evaporate, He gets in the bowl and watchfully waits for me to bring a refill. He follows me with his eyes when he is hungry, too. That's an unmistakable gesture. He never has to wait for long.
He hates my hands when I invade his space for housekeeping. To me that is a good thing. I don't want him to get to used to me because I still might figure out a way to release him.
