Have never had personal ownership of chuckawallas but always considered one... Only desert species I've had are uro's and bearded dragons (havnt have a bearded dragon for years). I love uromastyx though... You live in an area where a single extra basking bulb is all thats needed, if you have a breeding trio setup you can easily pull in extra income out of them... It would at the least pay for keeping them, and then some. Ornates and Morracan uro's are my fav species. they are a very non aggressive but timid species, many of them pull out amazing colors to them.
And no idea about potters clay. Some people will form burrows and layer then with cement layers with sand.
