I have an almost 11 year old male iguana, Charlie. Last spring he didn't come out of breeding season so I had to turn his lights off after about 6 hours for a few weeks. That breeding season wasn't abnormal as far as personality and eating habits, it just lasted forever - like 5 months.
He's recently went into breeding season again and he is completely different than he's ever been. He hasn't eaten anything in probably 3 or 4 weeks, is biting and attacking his own tail, and ramming himself into the glass so hard and often that his mouth is super swollen and bloody. I can't even reach in to get his food bowl without and instant attack. Even opening his doors at night with lights off gets a reaction.
I don't know what to do. He looks like a real mess and I feel terrible for him. He keeps injuring himself and is skin and bones. There's not even fat on him tail anymore. I've taken his lights down to 8 hours a day on to see if that will help, it hasn't. I've tried putting towels in his cage and he will mate with it, but his behavior and self injury don't improve.
I'm at a loss. Any advice?
