My 8 year old female green iguana has been running away from me a lot over the past few months. This is not like her. She used to let me pet her all the time. Now she's even to the point where she's on alert when I even talk to her.
Back up a little. I've had her for about 8 years now. I got her from a breeder that did not take good care of her at all. When I got her, more than half her tail was cut/bitten/broken off somehow, what she's got now is new growth. It will never grow back to full length.
When she was a baby she was scared of everything. She wouldn't come out of her cave that I put in her cage. I had to take it away from her for a few hours a day so she would get some light.
She went through a biting stage, but eventually things got better, we worked together and it took me a few years to gain her trust. She would finally let me pet her, rub her back and head. She never did let me touch her tail. I have no idea how much trauma she went through with that. She wont let me hold her, but she's too big to be held and she freaks out when all her feet aren't secure on something.
But now we're back to square one again. She's not biting but she will run away if I try to pet her or sometimes if I even talk to her. The only thing I can think of is that I have grown a beard. I'm wondering if she sees that as a dewlap and thinks I'm aggressive? I don't know. Is this possible that she's afraid of my beard?
