SHIPPING MY IGUANA

i need to ship my iguana to my sisters house in Florida I am in NYC how much is that

I hope she lives North of West Palm Beach where it won't survive when it it escapes.

You've ignored the law in NYC by owning it there and it's not welcome in Florida when it escapes.

Iguanas are not legal in NYC and that's where you said you're from.

The population is exploding again in Florida and I'm getting tired of catching and freezing them. It's over 1000 to date and that's just from my yard.

This morning I'm looking out the window at another dozen. Maybe the released/escaped Pythons will eat some of them.

I think we're getting close to a ban on ALL exotics. and it can't come soon enough.

Excuse me while I plug in my freezer, again.

Euthanasia by freezing is universally condemned. Some institutions still do it because it's free and never fails.

The quicker and more sneaky the dispatch is, the better for the iguana.

I know this will freak people and I'm sorry. You should stop reading now.

The high-class way to do it is to have a vet give an injection. It stops respirations and the ig dies from asphyxiation after he passes out from the drug. If you can't afford that, put it on a piece of plywood, cover the ig with dark cloth, take aim, and smack it's head hard with a four foot long 2x4. Remember how tough iguanas are, so, so be accurate and strong. To us this is gruesome, but to the iguana it's instantaneous. Don't do this on soft ground, because it might live through it. Instead use hard pavement or plywood.

i recently encountered a baby bat whos momma never returned- it was going to a wildlife rehabber but she was out of town for 2 days so I was feeding it until turning it over- the lil' bugger was so cute that I got careless...then I got paranoid so turned it in for testing BUT when I contacted Enviromental Services they explained that they do not accept live animals for rabies testing, seemed silly to me coz they have to kill em to test em ...anywho- they proceeded to give me my legal options for the state of Maryland for destroying the bat. Freezing was top of the list, then drowning...course there are faster ways but they need the brain intact....I spent hours on the phone and finally found a vet who was SHOCKED at the intructions they gave me and gladly euthanized the bat and handle all the details at no cost.

I realize iguanas dont carry rabies but my point is that most states have less humane legal ways to destroy problem animals.

Oh Roger, don't be such a baby. The State says it's the legal and humane way to do it.

If I try to whack one with a 2 x 4 and somehow do it wrong, I could be arrested for animal cruelty. Can you imagine pulling a biting, tail whipping iguana out of a trap with one hand and then using the other hand to whack it to death with a board? Or, instead of the board, hold it down and give it an injection?

Your high class method would cost $75 a pop and I couldn't find a vet to do it once I told them I would be bringing in dozens.

Would you be willing to humanely catch rats, bring them to a vet and pay $75 each? Why would you put such a burden on a homeowner dealing with a problem like this?

What we could use is a fund maintained by pet stores and iguana owners to pay for PROPER disposal by a vet. You set it up and I will do my part to let everybody know where to take the the live iguanas they catch for elimination.

A few years ago I spoke with Doug Mader (a vet in the Keys) about learning how to inject them. I gave up on that because there is no way for me to get the supplies to do the job.

If you recall, tens of thousands of them froze to death when the temps dropped a couple of years ago and nearly eliminated the feral population. Iguanas freezing to death in Florida is natural.

I was talking about ONE iguana or ONE rat, not dozens. You misinterpreted my description of a way to euthanize by simplifying it to holding a wild and crazy adult ig in your left hand and trying to dispatch it with your right arm. That's a blatantly stupid concept, and if you say that's what I described, you WIN the argument every time.

drown 'em? If they are already in a trap, just dump the trap into a garbage can full of water. Can't be too hard to make sure the trap sinks.

I'd keep a lid on the garbage can so skeeters don't multiply in there.

I used to drown rats for one of my boas when his eyesight went downhill. Didn't take very long and it was way more effective than trying to bonk them on the head.

I understand it can take up to an hour. Igs can stay under water a long time.
